Mamalujo is the Chronicler at Kinoomaagewaapkong, “the rocks that teach,” nine thousand years ago. He is the first technical writer.
A poor hunter, afraid of the dark, born with twelve toes, Mamalujo is known among his clan as mayagenim, “quarefella,” or “weirdo.”
When the odoodem’s chieftain demands that Mamalujo create a tribute to him upon the Teaching Rock, Mamalujo produces a work of mocking satire. Angered and embarrassed, the chieftain fires Mamalujo as Chronicler, banishing him from the odoodem—a veritable death sentence.
Mamalujo’s friend, the medicine man, is distraught. Gracealujo, the woman Mamalujo secretly loves (and who secretly loves him), is heartbroken.
Upon leaving the Anishinaabe hunting grounds, Mamalujo embarks upon a journey of survival, discovery, and resurrection.
